MOUSE
Quietly creeping,
accomplishing his purpose without attention,
The wise little mouse trusts the Creator.
Help me, small one, to true and find initiative
So that wonderful changes come my way.
Scrutiny, Detail
Mouse medicine is both a great power
and a great weakness.
It is good to pay attention to all details,
but bad to over-analyze every little thing.
Mouse people can be fixated on methodology and appear to be nit-pickers.
They will make the simplest task fraught with difficulty.
Everything must be in order in a Mouse's house.
Often, Mouse people are fearful of life.
You should try to see the larger picture
Even if you live in a small house in Los Angeles,
you are also part of the Earth, galaxy and universe.
If a Mouse totem has recently entered your life,
ask yourself if you have neglected the trivial but necessary things in life.
Have you become too focused on one or two activities
and neglecting opportunities around you?
Or are you trying to do too many things at the same time?
Mouse medicine can show how to focus
and how to attain the big things by working on the little things.
Mouse has only that which is right in front of his eyes. He reaches up to grab a stalk of grass and pulls it down towards him, bowing the blade. Then mouse sits for what seems like hours inspecting and picking every last morsel of seed off the stalk with his dexterous little hands. Mouse has many predators, too many to count. Rather than overwhelm himself with the complexity of watching, listening, smelling, and sensing for his enemies far and wide he paradoxically does the opposite. His focus comes forward and stays on what only is near, and somehow, some way, that which is near warns him of danger. Mouse is safe in the details, safe to live out his life, raise young, and make a comfortable home underground. This alone is nothing short of miraculous.
Ever heard the phrase “the devil is in the details”? If the devil is there, then the details are something to tend only by duty, only by necessity, and to be done with as quickly as possible. No need to get your hands dirty! The incredible harm done with this simple, excuse me, but stupid idiom is so subversive that we miss an obvious key to salvation. Mouse serves so many through his life, the least of not is the greatest sacrifice he will ever make, his life. His flesh with likely turn to fox flesh or hawk flesh or snake flesh. He has so many incarnations to come bless his sweet soul, but before we say goodbye to mouse we must not miss that key. We must not curse his intrusion on our house and into our lives as a sign that we are living in filth. This sweet, soft ,and so very clean little creature is bringing you a message. The meaning of mouse may be the most important message you will ever receive in your life. Please, please don’t excuse it!
The phrase “the devil is in the details” is thought to actually originate from the phrase “God is in the detail”. Did you miss that? Let me say it again on behalf of the quiet-as-a-mouse little friend of ours that doesn’t always speak up on his own behalf. God is in the detail. Now sit with that. Changes things doesn’t it?
What if you started to see God or Spirit or Source or Light or whatever power you know greater than yourself in the detail of things. What if while walking out to your car in the morning you noticed the stunning pattern of frost across the windshield? What if when you flung that huge desire to live a life full of purpose out to the cosmos you received an answer no bigger, no louder than a mouse? Would you notice it? Would you be grateful for it? Or, are you waiting for a fairy to come, wand in hand, and make your dreams all so in a shower of sparkles and magic? Are you compelled beyond reason to shout from a mountaintop about your success? What if, like mouse, we had no words to describe our success?
When looking at what does mouse mean in your life, know that the little helper is here to remind us that more often than not our wishes are granted in between the lines and inside the mundane. Wishes are granted in between blades of grass and inside fine heads of seed. The universe is conspiring to shower you with tiny, quiet miracles every single moment of your life. Mouse knows this. This is what makes mouse a monk. If only we all could know this. Mouse in his quiet, unassuming way prompts us to remember that miracles make sense in the quiet where nothing else clouds our thoughts. Miracles make sense when living a tiny life in a tiny universe. Mouse knows this. This is what makes mouse a monk. If only we all could know this. When we stop looking far and wide and outside of ourselves for the answers and, instead, truly focus on what is right here with us, we begin to see the divine everywhere.
